Any full time hired artists actually able to tell me if you’ve time for free time and personal activities? It feels like even as a freelance artist I get 0 freetime to myself, the few times I do personal art I assume would get me fired from an actual job.
Just curious, because…
Eegh… This is what I was worried of. I’ve been debating giving up art for a while, but I think the amount of work a career of it takes will end up just breaking the final thread.
Its really one of those things that you do because you love it, not really because you care about things like.. time off or decent pay >_< Of course, getting paid and getting a day off now and again is super nice :D
I guess over the years, i’ve gotten so used to working 7 days a week that I get bored on my “day off” and it doesnt even faze me anymore. I was a bar manager for years, and before that, a manager at a pet store (neither of which I got more then 1-2 days off a month) and before that, i was in college and working part time at a bar which meant… i didnt get a day off for about 7 years >_<.
Well, shitty thing is, I actually don’t like drawing at all. I do it because I can, and because drawing my own stuff will improve my skill for ‘use’ later with a career… So the only reason I’m going into art is..well, for money. /: Because I have no other useful skill to utilize.
Now I’m a bit worried, I can barely handle college + commissions.
Im not freelance but I get freelance (from work) on top of the work that I have to do 9-5.30. Most of the time during the week I have little energy mentally to sit down and do work so I tend to get it done on weekends which can get in the way of personal activities, Planning is the key, saying I will do x amount of hours doing this, and having time to do other things be it going out or chilling out.
The trick is not to feel guilty spending time doing your own thing even if you have a commission. Give yourself plenty of time to do one. BUT at the same time, freelance doesn’t pay my rent, its just a bonus- other people who do freelance NEED that money to feed themselves and therefore must put more hours in.
My only advice would be to treat your freelance like a full time job, do 6-7hrs (get up early if you must) and keep some hours for yourself in the evening/night/weekends. xx
